Club Mission Statement

Elite Warrior Youth League was established to afford community youth opportunities to learn the fundamentals of Collegiate wrestling including discipline, team unity, respect, and sportsmanship.

Club History

Elite Warrior Youth League was founded in 2002.  Parents and coaches felt that there was a need for a little league wrestling program in the Denver area.  In 2002, our first fully registered team consisted of more than thirty kids and ten coaches.  Most of these kids were new to the sport, some coming from football backgrounds others just wanting something productive to do.  Several wrestlers placed in the state tournament after the first wrestling season.  The following year, the number of participants doubled.  To date, we have over 15 state placers and several state champions.

Participation And Work Ethic

In the Elite Warrior Wrestling room we encourage participation from wrestlers as well as parents.  We have two degrees of wrestlers in the room:  Beginner and Advanced.  To go from beginner to advanced team you must demonstrate and master all beginner moves and techniques.  This is to assure that all wrestlers are learning the basics of wrestling before they can move to the next level.  Too many times we push kids through the sport without giving each competitor a good base of techniques.  Wrestling is a sport that requires a tremendous amount of work and dedication to be successful.  Countless hours must be spent practicing and competing.   The more a kid wrestles and drills techniques, the better he will be and the more fun he will have in the sport of wrestling.  The primary emphasis is not to win every match, but to develop skills that lead to increased performance at all levels of competition.

Mental Attitude

Your mental attitude plays a major role in your ability to be effective on and off the mat.  In our wrestling room we encourage wrestlers to have a positive attitude no matter what the situation.   The outcome of every match is almost always linked to the attitude of the wrestler.  Sportsmanlike conduct on the part of everyone associated with the club is of the utmost importance.    It is how you win and lose that demonstrates attitude and character.

These are the things that you will receive with the Elite Warrior Youth League?

  1. Self Confidence, Discipline, and Good Work Ethic
  2. Great coaching at all practices.  Our coaches train in the off season to prepare your kids for the wrestling season.
  3. Rental of a uniform by Elite Warriors Youth League.  All uniforms should be returned at the end of each season.
  4. Warrior Wrestling t-shirt that athletes get to keep.
  5. Primary or Secondary injury insurance provided by USA Wrestling which covers all athletes during practice and tournaments.

*** We try to keep our registration fees as low as possible to help prevent any wrestler from being unable to participate because of finances.   Most registration fees for local area teams runs between $75-$200 dollars.  That is why it is very important that we get as much help at our hosted tournament and fundraisers as possible.

 The Wrestling Season

The wrestling season will begin in mid-October and will run through mid-February.  For advanced wrestlers, wrestling may continue into early March.  All current members must have registration materials in by the first week of practice.  New members should register their athletes during new registration week.  (Please check the registration link on the home page for details.)

Program Support

Registration fees do not provide the funds necessary to support this program.  The proceeds come from the club tournaments and designated fund-raisers.  Elite Warriors Youth League hosts the Omari Nunn Memorial Tournament every year.  This event is one of the major fund-raisers for our club and at least one volunteer from each family will be needed to work a portion of the event.  Parent involvement is encouraged and needed.  As with most organizations, there are always too many things to do and not enough people to do them, therefore, your help is very much appreciated.

Elite Warriors Youth League is a volunteer run entity.   We rely on parental help throughout the season to have a successful season.  There are many ways in which you can be involved.  We encourage parents, both mom and dad’s who are interested, to fill out a coaches application and become coaches for the Elite Warriors.  This will not only help you as a parent to further your knowledge of wrestling but it will also help the team as a whole as more kids become involved with this great program.  We also have positions available on our board of directors for parents who would like to take a more active role in the club development and decision making process.

The Elite Warriors Youth League is a non-profit organization.  This League welcomes any additional support from the business community.  Should you know of a potential sponsor willing to donate items such as supplies or raffle items, please contact one of our Elite Warrior Youth League board members.  Their numbers can be found on the web site contact page.

Meets And Tournaments

Beginning in November, the wrestlers will begin wrestling in tournaments and dual matches.  Tournaments and dual matches provide wrestlers with an opportunity to utilize the skills that they have learned and drilled in practice.  These tournaments are usually scheduled on Sunday.  Weigh-ins for these wrestling tournaments are on Saturday mornings.   The team will caravan to weigh-ins together to make sure that every athlete is weighed-in at his appropriate weight class and age group.

All tournaments are sanctioned by the Western Suburban Wrestling League.  Each tournament usually costs between $12 and $15 dollars.  All Elite Warrior athletes are covered under the leagues designated insurance providers which is through the countries very own USA Wrestling Organization.  Information on insurance will be handed out in your team welcome packet which will be handed out at registration and at the first day of practice.

The Match Process

A match consists of three periods plus overtime if the match is tied at the end of the third period.

First Round - The start of the first round begins from the standing or neutral position.  Both wrestlers must attempt to stay inside the circle while on their feet and earn a takedown.   After a takedown is established then the wrestler on top must work for the pin and the bottom wrestler must work for an escape or reversal.

Second Period - In this period action begins from either the referee’s down position or the neutral position.  Choice of position is decided by a coin toss.  Winner chooses up, down, neutral, or he may defer to his opponent.  If he chooses to defer, he will have the choice in the third period, assuming the match continues to the third period.

Third Period - In this period action begins from either the referee’s down position or neutral position.  The loser of the second period coin toss now has the choice of up, down or neutral.

Overtime - A 30 second period begins in the neutral position.  The first wrestler to score a point wins.  If no points are scored, then a choice will be given to the wrestler who scored a point in the match first.  He will choose top or bottom.  The top wrestler must ride and the bottom wrestler must escape to win the match for 30 sec.  (Times may differ per period per age group.)

Wrestling Practice

Wrestling practice is an instrumental part on the road to success.  It is very important that every wrestler attend as many practices as possible.  We will cover quite a bit of technique and drills in the very beginning of the season.  It is very easy for athletes to fall behind if they constantly miss practice.  Wrestlers must be on time to practice.  If practice starts at 6:00 PM, then all athletes need to be in full gear ready to practice at 6:00PM.  By having the kids ready to go on time we can make sure that all technique for the day is covered and that we are able to end practice on time.

Beginners

4-6 Year Old Wrestlers:  At the coaches and parents discretion all 4-6 Year old wrestlers who are not second and third year wrestlers will practice form 6-7 PM.  An hour practice is usually good for the young wrestlers.  Due to the difference in attention spans some young wrestlers who can tolerate extra time may be asked to stay until 8:00 PM.  Parents are responsible during practice times to make sure that their child is behaving appropriately.  This will again allow coaches to get through the proper amount of technique for the practice.

Advanced Wrestlers:

6-14 Year Old Wrestlers:  Advanced wrestlers are defined as wrestlers who have one or more years of experience.  The advanced team members will also be selected at the coaches’ discretion.  Advanced wrestlers are expected to stay at practice from 7-8:00 pm Mon-Wed-Thurs-Fri.   We have added an extra day this year for the advanced kids to allow them one extra day on Thursdays that will be open only for advanced team wrestlers.  This allows the coaching staff to assure that the advanced wrestlers are advancing in their knowledge and physical aspect of the sport.

Schedules:

Practice, registration and tournament schedules will be posted on the website in early October.  If the schools in the local area are shut down for inclement weather, practice will be canceled.  If we need to contact you by phone to tell you important information we will utilize a parent-calling tree.

Clothes:

Athletes will need to show up to practice in shorts and t-shirts.  You may go to the nearest sports store and purchase your own headgear, kneepads and wrestling shoes.  We will have a vendor who will come in sometime during our first or second week of practice to sell these items to you.  Any current parents who have old shoes that are too small for your child to wear this year please fill free to donate your old shoes to our program.  This will enable us to help some of our less fortunate families out with rental wrestling supplies.

Hygiene:

Funguses and bacteria can be transmitted from one individual to another.  This happens all of the time in everyday life. Due to the close contact of wrestling, we highly recommend that the participants take a shower immediately after practice upon returning home.  We mop the mats twice daily and encourage good hygiene.  If a wrestler notices a rash, immediately notify a coach.  No wrestler may compete or practice with an unidentified rash.  Most rashes can be treated in a few days and are more of a nuisance than anything.  No one is allowed on the wrestling mats with street shoes.  If a child doesn’t have wrestling shoes yet, please disinfect a pair of tennis shoes with bleach and have them use these tennis shoes as wrestling shoes until they receive their wrestling shoes.  Do not let them use these tennis shoes for anything other than wrestling.  Please do not let your athletes wear the wrestling shoes outside of the wrestling room because it contaminates the shoe with bacteria from the ground.
